Course Description:
This course is designed to introduce the students to the concept and application of the academic research paper and its components. The ability to understand a thesis and utilize critical thinking in order to produce synthesis is also featured. In addition, the course features genre studies and will develop the student’s ability to analyze various analytic problem sets and discover a creative solution that is rooted in the student’s own intellectual strengths while building other areas for the student’s academic and personal growth. By the end of the course the student will create a self-exploratory research paper of collegiate quality. English Composition is a required course for all students at the Clifton International University.
Required Textbook and Materials:
CIU courses use Open Educational Resources (OER) and other materials specifically donated to the University with free permissions for educational use. Therefore, students are not required to purchase any textbooks or sign up for any websites that have a cost associated with them. The main required textbooks for this course are listed below, and can be readily accessed using the provided links. There may be additional required/recommended readings, supplemental materials, or other resources and websites necessary for lessons; these will be provided for you in the course’s General Information and Forums area, and throughout the term via the weekly course Unit areas and the Learning Guides.

Software Requirements/Installation:
No special requirements are required beyond a browser and a PDF viewer; however, there are bonus material that utilizes PowerPoint and YouTube style video.
Learning Objectives and Outcomes:
By the end of this course students will be able to:
- Compose a research paper and analyze its components.
- Assess source material and identify the key concepts with their given strengths.
- Discuss given readings and procedures while applying techniques learned for synthesis.
- Strengthen critical reading skills through the building and practice of assessment strategies.
- Apply class techniques for improvement in their over-all academic and life enhancement.
Course Schedule and Topics:
This course will cover the following topics in eight learning sessions, with one Unit per week. The Final Exam will take place during Week/Unit 9 (CIU).
